For our Fall 2020 Issue editor Elizabeth Rhodes art directed a photoshoot with photographer Saryn Christina in Los Angeles for our beauty editorial “Shimmer”. Take a look behind the scenes to see the inspiration behind this editorial and how it all came together.
This beauty editorial featured Blue Lynn and Tracey Delgado of Willow Model Management with makeup by Shoichiro Kashibe and hair styling by Jeanna Kier. Saryn Christina served as photographer and I art directed the shoot in downtown Los Angeles. The genius of Shoichiro’s makeup artistry was the focus of this editorial.
The story behind this editorial’s concept is about texture, specifically taking inspiration from minerals and forms occurring in nature. We were interested in creating images that distort or magnify the perspective of the subject to make textural differences the focal point. The vibe of this texture story was sexy and moody, bringing the story of the makeup to a dark place, emphasizing rich and mysterious hues.
Here’s a part of the mineral references used for this editorial:
Our models showcased opposing looks throughout the editorial, displaying warm, inviting hues with sultry glowing skin in contrast to sharp, cool tones making the contours of the face more prominent.
Blue’s makeup reflected gemstones like Carnelian, Garnet, Pyrite, Aragonite, and Amethyst imbuing her looks with a sense of heat and sensuality.
For Tracey’s makeup, the looks were inspired by cooler tones with layered colors for depth. The inspiration for these looks came from stones like Azurite, Lapis Lazuli, Celestite, and Sodalite.
At the end of the shoot we encouraged Shoichiro to do whatever he wanted as a final look, and he definitely seized the opportunity! He created this final look entirely with body paint and glitter. (Oh, the horror of the cleanup process that ensued… but all worth it!) I dig the 70s glam vibe and referenced Bowie’s cover for Pinups released in 1973 in the model’s poses.
