on this day : Depeche Mode releases “Blasphemous Rumours” – October 29, 1984

I don’t want to start any blasphemous rumours here but I think it’s fair to say that Some Great Reward was Depeche Mode’s breakthrough album in America: “People are People”, “Master and Servant”, and this single, which was packaged with “Somebody” as the B-side. It’s a slow burn of a track, with lots of time for posing or waving your arms around on the dancefloor before busting a move during the chorus. Oh, and then there’s the blasphemy part, which did actually ruffle feathers back in 1984. As Alan Wilder told an interviewer back then, “religion is a more sensitive subject than sex.”
