auxiliary profiles : Vanity Kills

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

photo : Zach Rose
interview : Zach Rose

Auxiliary Magazine’s regular contributor, the infamous Vanity Kills, is one that matches sharp wit and insight with a varied background in fashion, cosmetics, and music to bring readers content that is not only informative, but also highly entertaining.  Vanity Kills has plenty of experience writing on topics she enjoys and embodies, currently she has an online column on Lip Service’s webzine entitled, Lethal Style.  Contributing beauty articles and a multitude of in depth interviews with designers from around the world to each issue, she brings a unique and fun persona to Auxiliary Magazine.

What do you do at Auxiliary Magazine?

Instruct and inform the masses in all manners related to the fine art of warpaint application, interview people that don’t suck, and formerly provided comic relief with some 100% fictional ridiculous goth drama. Also I allegedly partied with the copy editor in at least five different states.

As an independent writer working with multiple companies including Lip Service and Auxiliary, what is it about writing that is most appealing to you? How did you get started?

As frustrating as it is at times, it’s the air I breathe. As much as writing the perfect paragraph which conveys my thoughts on Hello Kitty corsets in the exact matter I want it to keeps me up at night, I cannot picture ever NOT doing it. Being physically rewarded for my efforts with money and merchandise is nice, since I put a lot of effort into the written word, but it’s never been my motivation. The greatest reward is the immense sense of accomplishment derived from bringing to completion a finished piece that I would have loved to stumble upon, in either a book or a blog, and find myself. When I feel like I’ve written something equally informative and pleasurable to read.

I’ve always loved fashion magazines. As long as I can remember, I’ve read every woman’s magazine I could get my hands on and mentally devoured all the vignettes that accompanied the fashion spreads. My brain absorbed them like a sponge. It didn’t matter if the outfits themselves were hideous or exquisite. You can’t mount a painting on the wall without a frame. Words are that frame. In time, I found myself ‘styling’ things in my head. Constantly thinking of what shoes would go with what skirt and what earrings would complement the ensemble as a whole. Fleshing out these thoughts into full fledged fashion and beauty articles was just a natural extension of all that internal style obsessed dialogue.

designer spotlight : Bibian Blue

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

Spain’s underground fashion can likely hold a torch to the tight lace, undulating ruffle, and arresting shades and colors of Bibian Blue.  Using the corset in so many interesting ways, including steampunk, couture, and glamour designs, the catalogue of style at Bibian Blue appeals as much to the imagination as to the delight of the world over.

interview by Zach Rose and Meagan Hendrickson
photographer : María S. Varela
makeup artist : Jose Valle and Masuimi Max
hair stylist : Jose Valle
models : Masuimi Max, Bárbara Masiá, and Miss Doll

Could you tell us about the origin of the name “Bibian Blue”, how did you come by that name?
Bibiana : My real name is Bibiana and Blue is an adjective that when I started, described perfectly the sort of mood that I wanted to transmit into my clothing. Nowadays my collections are more colorful and diverse but still keep the romantic feeling of it. I think it suits my designs.

Your designs clearly have a lot of passion behind them, what are the goals or principles you try to adhere to when creating them?
BB : I just do what I like, I don’t really think about it that much. With time I am getting more confident about my ideas, so I just let them flow. I love to experiment with new directions.

What is your design process and how has it changed over the years?
BB : When I start a collection, I find the general concept of it, and I spend a few months looking for inspirations toward that direction, like colors, shapes, and fabrics or anything that I find interesting or related to the concept of idea of the collection. When part of the designs are drawn, then I start to make them. Some of them are the same as they were drawn and some end up completely different from the original idea, but in any case, there’s been a few months of work behind them.

the PinUp : Kelleth in Artifice Clothing

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

The December/January 2010/2011 Issue of Auxiliary Magazine features the beautiful Kelleth Cuthbert as our PinUp.  We had the opportunity to travel up to Working Proof Studios in Toronto, Ontario to work with talented designer Emily Rishea of Artifice Clothing, Irina Lavrega who did an amazing job on hair, and Heather Orr of Dream Clean Makeup.

The uniquely moldable Kelleth Cuthbert of Next Models Toronto is a model whose work ethic and dedication to the industry is one that is not to be taken lightly.  As an icon who seamlessly blurs the lines of commercial and alternative modeling, Kelleth’s commitment to professionalism has brought her much success in just a few short years.

aesthetic : medieval metal

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

The October/November issue’s Aesthetic brings you Medieval Metal.

If the feudal Dark Ages immersed itself wholly in the thrash laden doom of heavy metal, perhaps it would take hold of all manner of fealty, from the lower serfdom to ladies of the manor. The etchings of Durer seem appropriate enough within the confines of the manor walls and tavern alike, whether it be the year 1350 or our own present dark times.

Smash styles and looks together, create your own aesthetic.

Below are a few additional photos from Auxiliary’s shoot for the October/November issue Aesthetic feature. Enjoy!
