style : Punk Never Dies

Monday, May 13th, 2013

We use clothing to help define ourselves. Punk style has infiltrated many other genres and created its own sub-genres. It’s walked runways and the street corners of your neighborhoods. It’s hung out in the pages of Vogue and in dive bars around the globe. Punk is about self-expression. So instead of hating the mainstream for adopting our underground looks, embrace it. Take it back, use what you like. Layer spikes and chains; mix in rhinestones and some rock style glamour and tattoos. Add sparkle and color to ripped and distressed. Play with patterned leggings and stud shirts, mini skirts and printed tees. This look is as much about the clothing as it is your attitude. Just remember, punk never dies.

We captured a few behind the scenes shots at the photoshoot! Our fashion editor Tasha Farrington put together this feature with photographer Ian Compton and it was shot at his studio in Toronto. Ashley, the model, runs a salon so she came to the shoot right from work and arrived all done up and ready to go! Tasha got her dressed for the first look, adhered the nails she made for the shoot, plus added some accessories. For the second look, Ashley redid her hair and added some more color to the eyes, darkening them up a bit. The nails were attached with Nailene Tabs and stayed on through the whole shoot: changing, doing hair, everything. Right before shooting the second look Tasha cut up the tights while Ashley was wearing them so she could place the rips better. After shooting the second look they called it a wrap! With lots of planning before hand and the small team all rocking their parts amazingly the whole shoot only took four hours. That’s pretty sweet considering most of our shoots usually take all day!

item of the week : Ouija Garter Socks and Garters by Too Fast

Friday, January 4th, 2013

The word trendy has a negative connotation, but trends are not always bad. A more positive view is that trends are the pulse of the collective fashion conscious. Really the key to trends are to follow along with them only when they really tickle your fancy and to follow them in your own unique way. Trend one, occult symbols and motifs on everything and anything. Trend two, leggings and more leggings. Equals, occult symbols all over leggings. Solution, Ouija Garter Socks and Garters by Too Fast. St. Peter’s crosses and pentacles seem obvious picks if you enjoy the occult symbol trend, so go with Ouija board motifs instead. An opaque leg covering that is not leggings, over the knee socks and playful garters. While wearing Too Fast’s Ouija Garter Socks and Garters you’ll be in trend, but in a unique enough way to still stand out!

The Too Fast Ouija Garter Socks and Garters are available for $15 and $7 at www.toofastonline.com.

Feb/March Issue Look : In this fun and flirty take on the theme, with a dress by Too Fast, we embrace many forms of death in many skeleton animals, even skeletal unicorns! Pair that with some charm and sass from Frills & Morbidity with their Portrait of the Dead Necklace or the Skeleton Charm Bracelet. Both must-haves to dress up any death-loving femme fatale.

Too Fast Animal Skeleton Dress and Iron Fist heels paired with Portrait of the Dead Necklace and Skeleton Charm Bracelet both by Frills & Morbidity and Moon Raven Designs Oxidized Metal Raven Skull Pendant.

Alternate Look 1 : Looking for a little more sexy, enough to drop ‘em dead? The Kreepsville Skeleton Tunic Dress will hug your body in all the right places. Can’t seem to get enough skulls? Thankfully there are designers such as Moon Raven Designs, who are creating by hand, beautiful art skulls in all forms of metal. And Skullery, who are taking taxidermy to the next level, and creating replicas with as much detail and strength as the real deal.

Kreepsville666 White Skeleton Tunic Dress paired with Kreepsville666 Skeleton Bone Hand Necklace, Skeleton Charm Bracelet by Frills & Morbidity, and Magpie Black on Gunmetal Necklace by Skullery.

Alternate Look 2 : A maiden doesn’t always have to be in a dress. Take Mady Bone Design custom Skeleton Leggings and pair with a fun and friendly little Grim Reaper Tee by Sick On Sin and Too Fast’s Monster Fur jacket. Death isn’t sure if he should mess with this version of the maiden at all.

Monster Fur Jacket by Too Fast, Grim Reaper Tee by Sick On Sin, and Skeleton Leggings by Mady Bone Design paired with Kreepsville666 Skeleton Bone Hand Necklace and Magpie Black on Gunmetal Necklace by Skullery.

Too Fast’s Gracie Dress in Gonebad Print

Too Fast designs a lot of their own fashions and the Gracie Dress in the Gonebad print caught my eye as I like the bright colors and unique fabric. The Gracie Dress gives the look of a top and skirt combo, but is all one piece! Super easy to wear and to style with a pair of ballet flats or some high to the sky stilettos, whatever your look this dress will definitely have people asking you, “Where did you get that dress?!”.

The Gracie Dress in Gonebad Print by Too Fast is available online at www.toofastonline.com.

Tripp NYC’s Natural Cheetah Jungle Dress

Tripp NYC has really impressed me with this hot little Natural Cheetah Jungle Dress. The strapless sweetheart design will hug your curves in all the right places, and it has boning in the bust to keep those puppies locked and loaded! The cheetah fabric has a nice sateen finish that will look killer with a pair of black patent leather heels. If you’re feeling extra saucy, wear some nude back seamed stockings, and red lipstick for a modern retro appeal.

The Natural Cheetah Jungle Dress is available online at www.toofastonline.com.
