the PinUp : Marlo Marquise

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

With roots as a model and burlesque performer, Marlo Marquise is always expanding her creative horizons, she recently relocated to Los Angeles from New York City, starting the studio and production company House of Virtue with Billy Vahan of Antiseptic Fashion and a couture fashion line, Marquise Lapin.

Recently you moved to LA from New York City, now that you’ve been in LA for a bit, what differences are you noticing from life in New York City? What sparked this change of location? And have you noticed a difference in the creative energy of both cities?
Marlo Marquise : LA and NYC are very similar and very different. I live in downtown LA so it really reminds me of my east village neighborhood in Manhattan. Both areas are very young and creative. New York is very fast pace and LA is the complete opposite. That is the biggest adjustment I’ve had to get used to! I’m just a go, go, go workaholic kind of woman, so it’s very hard to be in such a lackadaisical environment now. Los Angeles seems more fine art focused, and New York City is more about the theater as far as creativity goes. Basically what made me commit to relocating was that instead of just performing and modeling, I wanted to produce large events and start designing clothing. LA has bigger and better venues, I can throw events in my loft, and downtown LA is the most efficient area for making garments and starting companies of the like. It just made sense! I was traveling back and forth for a year before deciding. I do however consider myself bicoastal, and always a New Yorker at heart!

the PinUp : Manzin

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

Starting out as a model borrowing his styling cues from Marilyn Manson, Manzin developed into a unique homme fatale. Manzin is now loose in New York City, not afraid to break the rules, and taking gender ambiguity to a personalized new level.

makeup & model : Manzin
location : Beauty Bar New york
interview by : Arden Leigh

You recently relocated to New York City. What have you been up to there and how has the new environment affected your personal style?
Manzin : Mostly I’ve been getting lost in the city and abandoning myself to whatever interests me. Once the tricky business of finding a job was out of the way, I could indulge a bit more in the restaurants, bars, clubs, and shops and I’m really enjoying the variety. It’s making me a bit more polished than I was before, I like to think I’ve come a long way from haunting thrift shops, now my key pieces are by quality designers and I have more access to better materials to play with. Plus spending time pounding the pavement has exposed me to a lot of different people and I’m constantly inspired and to some extent influenced by who and what I see on the streets.

Hailing from the island of Puerto Rico, Nina Flowers (Jorge Flores) has been a figure of flamboyant female impersonation since the age of 19. To Nina Flowers, makeup creates a character with a unique and iconic persona. Nina Flowers is perhaps best known as the recent finalist on RuPaul’s show Drag Race. A DJ and musician, Nina Flowers’ individual interpretation of the art of drag has graced cities across North America, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.

makeup, hair, styling, and model : Nina Flowers
interview : Meagan Hendrickson

Nina’s face is fabulous! What makeup tips can we “drag” out of you?

NF : Have patience, and it’s all about the tools! Meaning the brushes LOCAS!

You really stand out from the crowd, being a heavily tattooed female impersonator, have you ever received any negative feedback about your tattoos?

NF : That was more in my early days as a drag queen and performer when I started with my first tattoo, since then, no complaints.

You were my personal favorite on Season 1 of Rupaul’s Drag Race! Can you share any personal highlights of being on the show?

NF : A highlight for me and one of my fondest memories is RuPaul’s acknowledgement of my contribution to the show and my art in drag.
