style : Punk Never Dies

Monday, May 13th, 2013

We use clothing to help define ourselves. Punk style has infiltrated many other genres and created its own sub-genres. It’s walked runways and the street corners of your neighborhoods. It’s hung out in the pages of Vogue and in dive bars around the globe. Punk is about self-expression. So instead of hating the mainstream for adopting our underground looks, embrace it. Take it back, use what you like. Layer spikes and chains; mix in rhinestones and some rock style glamour and tattoos. Add sparkle and color to ripped and distressed. Play with patterned leggings and stud shirts, mini skirts and printed tees. This look is as much about the clothing as it is your attitude. Just remember, punk never dies.

We captured a few behind the scenes shots at the photoshoot! Our fashion editor Tasha Farrington put together this feature with photographer Ian Compton and it was shot at his studio in Toronto. Ashley, the model, runs a salon so she came to the shoot right from work and arrived all done up and ready to go! Tasha got her dressed for the first look, adhered the nails she made for the shoot, plus added some accessories. For the second look, Ashley redid her hair and added some more color to the eyes, darkening them up a bit. The nails were attached with Nailene Tabs and stayed on through the whole shoot: changing, doing hair, everything. Right before shooting the second look Tasha cut up the tights while Ashley was wearing them so she could place the rips better. After shooting the second look they called it a wrap! With lots of planning before hand and the small team all rocking their parts amazingly the whole shoot only took four hours. That’s pretty sweet considering most of our shoots usually take all day!

Feb/March Issue Look : In this fun and flirty take on the theme, with a dress by Too Fast, we embrace many forms of death in many skeleton animals, even skeletal unicorns! Pair that with some charm and sass from Frills & Morbidity with their Portrait of the Dead Necklace or the Skeleton Charm Bracelet. Both must-haves to dress up any death-loving femme fatale.

Too Fast Animal Skeleton Dress and Iron Fist heels paired with Portrait of the Dead Necklace and Skeleton Charm Bracelet both by Frills & Morbidity and Moon Raven Designs Oxidized Metal Raven Skull Pendant.

Alternate Look 1 : Looking for a little more sexy, enough to drop ‘em dead? The Kreepsville Skeleton Tunic Dress will hug your body in all the right places. Can’t seem to get enough skulls? Thankfully there are designers such as Moon Raven Designs, who are creating by hand, beautiful art skulls in all forms of metal. And Skullery, who are taking taxidermy to the next level, and creating replicas with as much detail and strength as the real deal.

Kreepsville666 White Skeleton Tunic Dress paired with Kreepsville666 Skeleton Bone Hand Necklace, Skeleton Charm Bracelet by Frills & Morbidity, and Magpie Black on Gunmetal Necklace by Skullery.

Alternate Look 2 : A maiden doesn’t always have to be in a dress. Take Mady Bone Design custom Skeleton Leggings and pair with a fun and friendly little Grim Reaper Tee by Sick On Sin and Too Fast’s Monster Fur jacket. Death isn’t sure if he should mess with this version of the maiden at all.

Monster Fur Jacket by Too Fast, Grim Reaper Tee by Sick On Sin, and Skeleton Leggings by Mady Bone Design paired with Kreepsville666 Skeleton Bone Hand Necklace and Magpie Black on Gunmetal Necklace by Skullery.

designer spotlight : Tess Hinterbichler

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

photography & interview : Luke Copping
dress : Tess Hinterbichler

makeup : Rachel Mazzie

In Buffalo’s Recent Runway 3.0 event there was a standout designer amongst the students involved. Tess Hinterbichler put together a chameleonic and mutable collection of garments ranging from casual separates to fully produced dress. Unique construction allows several of her garments to literally transform elements of themselves into new pieces of both artistic fashion and wearable sculpture.  The winner of the events Nancy Belfer award, Tess is slated to begin a fashion internship in Boston shortly. But while she is still in Buffalo we had the chance to produce a small shoot for Tess and conduct and interview with this young designer whose insights into fashion and design should excite Auxiliary readers about the next generation of designers we may be hearing a lot about in the future.

Your work seems to combine a unique futurist perspective with a sense of evolution and change. Where did you draw influence from for this collection?

Since this was my senior project for Buffalo State College, all of the designers were told the theme of the runway show (Technology: progression obsession) and told to run with it.  I must admit that when I first heard the theme, I was a little turned off because my design aesthetic is more ready-to-wear than futuristic or technological; I want my clothing to be beautiful yet functional.  After months of brainstorming and working on ideas for my concept board, I was finally able to translate the technology theme to my perspective as a designer.

I was inspired by the architecture of the Musée du Louvre in Paris, which is both modern and traditional. Functionality and innovation are two key terms that come to my mind when dealing with technology. The function or purpose of my technology is transformation.  I incorporated wire into certain seam-lines of my garments so that they can be morphed into a different look.

What is your background in design, how did you come to fashion as a field of study?

I had known that I wanted to be a designer for as long as I’ve remembered. I still have my second grade, college-ruled science notebook that I would draw designs in instead of taking notes; needless to say, science was never my subject.  The thing that eventually lead me to the decision to study fashion design in college was when I attended the senior fashion show at Syracuse College.  My godmother’s daughter, Molly studied fashion design there and the show was amazing!  The show was held in one of the auditoriums, there was loud music and lots of people.  It was the most exciting this I had ever been to.  On the four hour drive back to Buffalo from Syracuse I started to draw my our fashion sketches.  I knew from that point on that I wanted to be a designer.

lady gaga goes to jail

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Lady Gaga has become an undisputed master of the long form video, much like the epic and legendary “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, Gaga’s videos has become self contained mini movies whose plot is almost as integral to the overall effect of the production as is the music. Her latest video, “Telephone“; featuring Beyonce, continues to prove this point, as well as elevate it above the level of her previous outings. “Telephone” is a mish-mash of pop culture imagery crafted to the highest order of quality. Elements of prison exploitation films like Caged Heat, Quentin Tarantino, Japanese inspired graphics, and the usual quirky and informed styling that has become an integral part of Gaga’s videos. The fashionable Gaga takes it to a new level with the looks in this film, elements of punk, hip-hip, fetish, and found fashion abound. There are just so many nods and tributes thrown in here that it would seem likely to come of as a pastiche of the worst kind, however its handled with a style and sense of care that does make it come together as a whole and complete work, about the only moment in the video that may come off a little forced is Gaga’s Michael Jackson-esque dance moves as she is freed from prison at the end of the first act.
