We use clothing to help define ourselves. Punk style has infiltrated many other genres and created its own sub-genres. It’s walked runways and the street corners of your neighborhoods. It’s hung out in the pages of Vogue and in dive bars around the globe. Punk is about self-expression. So instead of hating the mainstream for adopting our underground looks, embrace it. Take it back, use what you like. Layer spikes and chains; mix in rhinestones and some rock style glamour and tattoos. Add sparkle and color to ripped and distressed. Play with patterned leggings and stud shirts, mini skirts and printed tees. This look is as much about the clothing as it is your attitude. Just remember, punk never dies.

We captured a few behind the scenes shots at the photoshoot! Our fashion editor Tasha Farrington put together this feature with photographer Ian Compton and it was shot at his studio in Toronto. Ashley, the model, runs a salon so she came to the shoot right from work and arrived all done up and ready to go! Tasha got her dressed for the first look, adhered the nails she made for the shoot, plus added some accessories. For the second look, Ashley redid her hair and added some more color to the eyes, darkening them up a bit. The nails were attached with Nailene Tabs and stayed on through the whole shoot: changing, doing hair, everything. Right before shooting the second look Tasha cut up the tights while Ashley was wearing them so she could place the rips better. After shooting the second look they called it a wrap! With lots of planning before hand and the small team all rocking their parts amazingly the whole shoot only took four hours. That’s pretty sweet considering most of our shoots usually take all day!

Sisters Tish and Snooky are the owners of Manic Panic, the alternative cosmetics company founded in 1977 that provided American punks with the shocking hair colors that defined their look. Together they opened the first punk rock boutique in America, and saw their hotly hued style evolve from anti-fashion theatrics to mainstream celebration.

You’re sisters and it seems like you’ve always been joined at the hip. Can you tell us a little bit about your childhood?
T : As a matter of fact, a friend of ours who’s one of the founding members of the Alice Cooper band, Dennis Dunaway, he calls us the “Siamese sisters”, we’re so joined at the hip.
S : Sometimes we’ll say the exact same thing at the exact same time, sometimes we’ll just… start singing!
T : Which is very weird.
S : In the same key, at the same point in a song. It’s just so funny, it freaks people out!
T : Yes, we’re definitely… connected.
S : A psychic told us we were supposed to be twins, but somehow Tish was late.
T : I’m usually the late one.
S : There’s no one else in the world that we have such a history with. We’ve known each other longer than anyone else in the world! But we’ve always been like this; Siamese-y.

It’s late February and I am getting restless and I can tell that because I have been in the mood for some sloppy raw punk music. Lucky for me the band from Copenhagen, Iceage just released their sophomore album this week on Matador Records titled You’re Nothing. This album has an old school punk feeling to it. The raw emotions and rough edges remain in tact which is often lost in recording and post production. They’re also headed over to North America soon to do some touring!
You’re Nothing is available for purchase at Matador’s Store and can be listened to online on Spotify.
When I heard that the Misfits were coming out with the live album DeA.D. Alive, I was a bit hesitant with my excitement levels. After putting the album on it took about 20 seconds for my hesitation to leave. There are so many of my favorite songs that are performed with so much energy! If you are a Misfits fan check this out!
DeA.D. Alive is available for purchase at www.misfits.com and can be listened to online on Spotify.
The word trendy has a negative connotation, but trends are not always bad. A more positive view is that trends are the pulse of the collective fashion conscious. Really the key to trends are to follow along with them only when they really tickle your fancy and to follow them in your own unique way. Trend one, occult symbols and motifs on everything and anything. Trend two, leggings and more leggings. Equals, occult symbols all over leggings. Solution, Ouija Garter Socks and Garters by Too Fast. St. Peter’s crosses and pentacles seem obvious picks if you enjoy the occult symbol trend, so go with Ouija board motifs instead. An opaque leg covering that is not leggings, over the knee socks and playful garters. While wearing Too Fast’s Ouija Garter Socks and Garters you’ll be in trend, but in a unique enough way to still stand out!
The Too Fast Ouija Garter Socks and Garters are available for $15 and $7 at www.toofastonline.com.
I’ve been listening to the newest album from Killing Joke, MMXII, for a review in the December/January 2012/2013 Issue. This could be a perfect album. Killing Joke is on their game with these last two albums. Perfect mix of their punk, postpunk, and industrial sounds. “In Cythera” is the lead single, which has a more mellow “Love Like Blood” sound than the rest of the album does. So good.
I don’t know about everyone out there, but I believe bowties are cool. And this one tops my list on the cool factor, with its mix of square and circular studs and five-inch tall spikes on a black background. Made by a duo of designers, two siblings, Poco and Chase are the masterminds behind Vile Broccoli Fur’s amazing spiked creations. This particular bowtie is handmade therefore each will be slightly different, which is something I value in handmade creations because each one is unique. Vile Broccoli Fur is based out of Las Vegas, NV and can be found on Facebook, Twitter, and Etsy.
