Heavy Red’s fashions bring out the best in a woman without overshadowing her. This great achievement can be partially attributed to the countless hours designer Tyler Ondine Whitman invested into studying and photographing the female form in all its variance; from the bare flesh of strippers, swaying from the poles of Chez Paree in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district, to the hyper-exaggerated visages of femininity presented by pageant winning drag queens in Alabama. Repeated exposure to this colorful Lucite heeled and be-sequined cast of characters taught Whitman how to articulate sensuality-drenched garments which readily invite flattery and praise, instead of simply drowning the wearer in a metric ton of lace, ruffles and tulle netting. Tyler Ondine Whitman : Heavy Red is itself like a young woman, one who is always discovering new facets of her personality. The August/September 2011 issue is the seventeenth issue of Auxiliary, a magazine dedicated to alternative fashion, music, and lifestyle. I implore you to think outside of the “sexy” bagged Halloween costume this year and take a look at what Heavy Red has been cooking up in terms of costuming. The Tragic Alice in Wonderland costume ensemble really caught my attention because there are three separate pieces that you can wear together for the Halloween season and then can be incorporated into your regular wardrobe. When you purchase the costume you receive the Tragic Alice dress in muted teal, a steel boned waist cincher in antique white with red stripes, and the full length harlequin tights. I think that’s an excellent value and I’m impressed they even included the tights! Another nice option about this ensemble is that the sizing is not one-size-fit-all, you can choose your dress size and choose the corset size, which takes the guessing game out of ordering costumes online and wondering if they are going to fit. I’m not normally a cape girl, in fact I am prone to turning up my nose at the idea of even contemplating admiring a cape at all! Heavy Red’s Love’s Devastation Floral Cape has made my fashion taste buds salivate! The black and red rose design makes this piece scream romance and can be paired perfectly with any of Heavy Red’s gorgeous corsets. I see elegant ladies wearing this cape to keep their bare shoulders warm on cool summer nights and can be worn as an alternative to a shrug. I really enjoy the versatility of this piece as a functioning piece of protective clothing, a statement piece in a wardrobe, and infusing old world romance once again in the modern world of alternative fashion.
