in attendance : Zola Jesus at MOCA

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

Los Angeles CA, August 17 – Experimental underground music sensation, Zola Jesus performed August 17 th in Downtown LA for MOCA’s free summer concert series, Play MOCA, with Active Child for a magical evening of epic sound. Though their roots are deeply entrenched in darkness, the crowd was mixed and brought a cross-section of fans spanning different genres, indie kids and goths alike.

The outdoor space was accented with a canopy of grey orbs levitating above the audiences’ heads. Concertgoers had free access to the museum for extended hours. People sauntered through the white hallways, while the echoes of Zola Jesus and Active Child acoustics reverberated off the walls.

A thick mist rolled across the stage as a stark, haunting voice permeated the crowd; awestruck, they swayed in sync as if floating gently on a celestial web. Zola Jesus in proper fashion donned a layered, light, ethereal slip with an avant-garde piece covering her torso like an armor. Barefoot, she embraced her diminutive frame and with a certain rawness, took the air out of peoples’ lungs in mid-breath every time she rang out a penetrating note, ripping through the air.

Zola Jesus is a successful fusion of a dream swathed in dark undertones while still maintaining a fierce resonance that stays with the listener long after the show is over. She’s an artist that manages to straddle different sounds and carry over strong in her live performance, a must for audiophiles across the board.

item of the week : RTS Inverted Cross Coffin Ring by Adelina Mictlan

Friday, August 24th, 2012

Not everyday is Halloween, but damn it, it should be. My usual attire isn’t head to toe dressed to the nines. I usually wear black jeans and black tees and add statement pieces that say a little bit about what I like and who I am. This ring therefore caught my eye, as it is a great statement piece. It’s an awesome coffin-shaped ring with a cut out cross, wear the cross regular or inverted. Stylish, simple, and awesome for any day of the year. It’s on my wish list as I have been following Adelina Mictlan’s work for a while. Her lines tend to run in limited quantities or styles, so I suggest jumping quick if it’s something you’re digging as well.

The RTS Inverted Cross Coffin Ring is available online for $97 at www.AMictlan.etsy.com.

music video : Grimes – Genesis

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

Grimes continues to amaze with her music to video work! And it eerily goes beyond just a fine video. This morning a friend of mine posted to me in Facebook about Grimes: “Holy Shit, man. I can’t stop listening to this young lady. It’s like she’s making the world safe for beauty and darkness again…” And then BOOM! a few hours later she hits us with this little gem that should have every cosplayer and fanboy on the planet clambering for more! It’s like she has some sort of psychic super power to know when we need more preternatural synthpop!

music video : Liars – Brats

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012

Ever wonder what a lo-fi CGI interpretation of a Looney Tunes cartoon would look like if David Lynch was at the helm? Thankfully, Liars second video from WIXIW, “Brats”, answers that question before you can even ask it. Warning: may cause flashbacks, seizures, and a general fear of everything around you.

item of the week : spiked and studded bowtie by Vile Broccoli Fur

I don’t know about everyone out there, but I believe bowties are cool. And this one tops my list on the cool factor, with its mix of square and circular studs and five-inch tall spikes on a black background.  Made by a duo of designers, two siblings, Poco and Chase are the masterminds behind Vile Broccoli Fur’s amazing spiked creations. This particular bowtie is handmade therefore each will be slightly different, which is something I value in handmade creations because each one is unique. Vile Broccoli Fur is based out of Las Vegas, NV and can be found on Facebook, Twitter, and Etsy.

The Spiked and Studded Bowtie is available online for $50 at www.vilebroccolifur.etsy.com.

item of the week : Predator Rings Mini by Gilding Primal Instinct

Predator Rings Mini

Stumbling through the internet looking for inspiration, I fell upon the website for Gilding Primal Instinct. With an abundance of amazing jewelry pieces it’s hard to narrow down to a favorite, but something about the Predator Rings Mini caught my attention and stuck. They are made in New York by the vividly haunted mind of Danielle Nicole Hills, her work is beautiful and magical, with just a hint of the macabre. These wonderful little nightmares are made from oxidized bronze and are truly wicked looking. They are a compact, more endearing, mini version of the longer Predator Rings, which can be found in the galleries section. As much as I found the classic version appealing, it was the delicate yet frightening appearance of  the mini that has inspired me. Adorned with only one, or a collective set, these rings are bound to capture the attention, or perhaps heart of your admirers.

The Predator Rings Mini are available online for  $70 at www.GildingPrimalInstinct.com.
